Disclaimer: my son adores Richard Scarry books for the detailed illustrations and interesting story lines.Simply put, this is not Richard Scarry---it's Goldenbooks publishing under the estate of Richard Scarry. It's sneakily done, but check the inside jacket Library of Congress entry--no actual author listed.
What does this mean for the text? Lack of character names (Scarry ALWAYS named his characters!), simplified drawings, lack of narrative continuity and yes, as another reviewer mentioned, occasional mix ups of character animals AND names. I'm a bit peeved that Goldenbooks would sell this quality of book to kids who expect more stories like What People Do All Day or Huckle's Busiest Day Ever. It's like that scene in Elf, when the puppy is missing from the pages...

Bought this book along wtih Best Storybook Ever! for my son.
The book is filled with scenes from a town that has LOTS of stuff going on (store fronts, traffic jams, construction, etc)
It is amazing how much detail he puts into his pictures and captions.
My son LOVES this book and I love his complex simplicity.
There is always something new to find on the pages each time we read it.
Definitely recommend to anyone that likes Richard Scarry or has kids that like to read picture books with Mommy or Daddy at night (or anytime really)
Great, age-appropriate content with adorable illustrations. Everyone lives Richard Scary, and it's not hard to see why. Charming and useful is a pretty great combination for a family book.
I am a big fan of Richard Scarry in general, but this book -- published posthumously by the Estate of Richard Scarry -- does not live up to the excellence of other Richard Scarry books. If you're looking for a great Richard Scarry book, look elsewhere.
The Richard Scarry books have lost none of their charm over the years. My 3 year old grandson loves them all, but "Busy, Busy Town" may be his favorite. Adorable pictures and innocent silliness abound--and luckily we live in a busy, busy town that still has a bakery, a cobbler, and a barber shop with a barber pole!
I remember enjoying Mr. Scarry's books as a child, so I thought I'd give my daughter the chance to experience this book, especially since English is not her native tongue and picture books like this one are perfect for helping kids acquire new vocabulary.
It is exactly as I remembered it the full colors, the characters, the short descriptions...this is definitely a classic and a great book.
Now, bear in mind it was written a long time ago, so a few things are no longer used, but it's all part of the learning process, so it's all good.
Definitely recommend
Not the same as Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. Just not very interesting. Sexist like other reviews said but that doesn't bother me as much as a page that had a character labeled "hobo" with the caption "A hobo doesn't work, but he likes to ride in a boxcar." The illustration of the "hobo" is very stereotyped as well. I was shocked.
Richard Scarry's books are classics! They've gone through two generations in my family and `Busy, Busy Town' is a favorite. The delightfully drawn characters are a joy and the book shows the occupations of all kinds of people in this little busy town. I had to read them over and over again to my children and they delighted in searching and looking closely at the pictures to find their favorite animal characters.
The Scarry books are a delight and toddlers will learn a little bit about many things.
Disclaimer my son adores Richard Scarry books for the detailed illustrations and interesting story lines.
