I would recommend the book to all adult romance readers and writers who are game for the challenge of expanding their scope into the wide expansive genre that is ROMANCE. The story is heavy in erotica but nicely weaves the action into the fabric of a developing relationship that allows growth in both the characters, especially Kathleen. i received the full Series ARC through the BDSM Group with the promise of a review from the Author.
i have to say that about 10 pages in, i am totally & completely loving the Old Fashioned way JD writes this story!! She doesn't miss a beat. At first i thought UGH this is going to be boring & hard to read. And you know what? It's absolutely Fantastic!! i mean it's setting is 1937 before WWII & after the Great Depression. Add in the Mage's, Witches, Voodoo, Demon's, & other creatures that go bump in the night & this story just has it all!!
Stephen is a Vice Detective & Kathleen is a Paranormal story writer but she also reports the real stuff, the Demon's, etc, to her Mentor & the people who can come clean up the Demon & Witch (witches are evil in this story) mess!! All of this in a time when noone believes in that subject at all! -)
Honestly, i thought it was going to be too many subjects, too busy to comprehend. And it's not! Oh yes, i forgot Stephen is a Dom. Ok, i'm getting back to the story. More will be reveled.
Ok i'm back. i loved this story! As i said above, it has a little bit of everything. Along with the love affair going on in a time when people just didn't 'do' that. Let alone living the BDSM lifestyle. Kathleen is an educated woman working as a reporter/storyteller.
One thing about the descriptions (& i can't decide if it's my pet peeve or...) of sexual part's have a lot of different names. From dick to penis to c&ck to manhood. Same with pussy, womanhood (huh?) then c(&t. There are times when all the descriptions are in one sentence. Womanhood is actually fitting for the setting/era of the story, but to then say pussy in the next breathe just makes me, well you know. Honestly, it's my only peeve with the story!!

This book has been on my to-read list for awhile now but I didn't realise until I started reading that it actually consists of five very short books, now I'm not personally a fan of what is basically one book being broken down into several 30+ page reads but this was on KU and available as the complete series so it wasn't too bad.
It's set in 1937 and my first thought was that it was go into be so much more than I first expected.
Kathleen is a reporter but she's also a member of a secret society of Mages known as the Order of Prometheus, who date back to ancient Alexandria. While she sells stories of the weird to the masses, she sends reports on real monsters and demons to witch hunters within the Order.
Her boyfriend Stephen is a police detective and while her feelings for him run deep of anything she's afraid he's a little too restrained during love making...wow is she in for a surprise.
I have to say that I don't know if it's the time in which this book was set, the characters or the writing but the sex scenes seemed hotter than I expected, it could be the hint of the forbidden mixed in with Stephens dominance but they worked really well.
There's a lot of sex between these two, at least one large scene per 'book' and if you're looking for a hot read with two interesting characters then this could be just what you're looking for, the sex scenes are well written and the heat sizzles.
My problem was I'm a huge paranormal fan and for me this book promised so much but ultimately the paranormal side was kind of left by the wayside leaving me with so many questions and therefore I wasn't totally happy with the ending.
Now maybe I'm being unfair because like I said it works well as a hot romance but the paranormal angle pulled me in but ultimately left me wanting.
JD effortlessly weaves knowledge of the Old Ones and magick in with a story that is wrought with descriptive erotica. The tentative initial relationship mixed with the growing trust and lust between Dom and sub. The sex is both rough and tender as the lovers begin to reveal more about themselves to each other. Pushing limits and overcoming obstacles. This is a couple you WANT to see together at the end.
